How Oxford Summer Program Nurtures Your Child’s Safety, Wellbeing, and Happiness

For nearly two decades, I’ve worked closely with families from around the world preparing to send their child abroad—often for the very first time. Oxford, famed for its academic excellence and welcoming community, is the ideal setting. Every parent I meet asks the same fundamental question: Will my child be safe, happy, and truly cared for? As both a parent and an academic, I know that nothing matters more than your child’s physical safety, mental wellbeing, and emotional health.

At the Oxford Summer Program, this isn’t just our promise—it’s our mission. Here’s how we deliver peace of mind to parents and a transformative experience to every child.

Small Cohorts, Genuine Care

Although TOI is one of the oldest summer programs at Oxford, we have always kept our numbers intentionally small—because for us, every child matters. Each student brings unique talents and ideas and deserves personalized attention, support, and active monitoring. Cohorts are never crowded; every student is well known and valued.

A Campus Head (also a qualified Safeguard Lead) leads each residence, while Residential Deans—responsible for only 10–15 students—live alongside them 24/7. This is true mentorship and care, not just supervision.

1. Safety First: From Arrival to Departure

Supervised airport transfers: Every student is welcomed at Heathrow Airport by our residential staff for safe, seamless pick-up and drop-off.

Caring, qualified staff: Residential Deans, insiders from Oxford University, act as guardians—supervising activities, outings, and daily routines.

Stringent vetting: All staff and tutors are DBS-checked, with multiple team members certified in First Aid.

Secure environment: Students live in secure Oxford campuses (or Imperial College London), spend most of their time supervised, and are always accompanied by staff—both junior and senior—during activities.

2. Emotional Support: Helping Children Thrive Away from Home

Global community: Most students are travelling abroad for the first time, forming friendships fast in our welcoming, multicultural environment spanning 130+ countries.

Small groups for personal connection: Staff spot and support any child struggling, feeling homesick, or needing extra assistance.

Proactive emotional care: Daily emotional check-ins, ongoing communication with families, and staff always available—parents can talk to the Campus Head whenever needed.

Smooth transitions: Group support and tailored encouragement ensure every child finds their place.

3. Physical Health, Active Days, and Healthy Meals

Balanced routines: Our program blends academics with outdoor walks, sports, and games in Oxford’s beautiful parks.

Healthy dining: Meals in Oxford’s dining halls cater to every dietary need—vegetarian, allergy, and faith-based.

Proactive care: Staff respond immediately, accessing professional medical help or NHS emergency services as needed. All medication is safely supervised.

Hygiene and comfort: Accommodation standards are high, and students are taught good habits for wellness.

4. Mental Wellbeing and Academic Growth

Personalised tutorials: Every student receives individual attention from tutors, building confidence and self-belief—no one is left invisible or afraid to ask questions.

Wellbeing workshops: Sessions on mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and resilience offer life skills beyond academics.

Personal growth: Supported independence and living away from home in a nurturing setting help students mature and prepare for future challenges.

5. Partnership With Parents

We believe in true partnership—keeping you updated, responding rapidly to your concerns, and celebrating your child’s achievements throughout their journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if my child feels homesick or lonely?

A: Many students travel alone for the first time, which can be hard for both them and their parents. Our staff are experienced in supporting first-time travellers. During the first two days, we give extra attention to each student with ice-breakers, games, team-building, and regular check-ins to help them settle in and make friends.

Q: How do you ensure my child’s safety outside of class?

A: Residential Deans supervise all academic, recreational, and residential activities. Students are usually not allowed off campus unless in a group and under supervision.

Q: What about medical care and allergies?

A: We ensure that there are always staff members with students who are first-aid qualified. Our healthy catering meets vegetarian, allergy, and faith-based needs. If medical care is required, we access NHS services and keep families fully informed, with all medication carefully supervised.

Q: Can parents communicate with staff during the program?

A: Yes, we maintain open channels at all times. You will receive regular updates and can contact campus leadership directly.

Q: How do students integrate with peers from other cultures?

A: Our diverse program fosters cross-cultural friendships and understanding through staff-facilitated team activities and enriching discussions.

In summary: At Oxford Summer Programs, your child’s safety, happiness, health, and personal growth remain our highest priorities. We treat every child as we would our own—ensuring their summer is not only unforgettable, but truly transformative.
