As soon as the calendar hits July, dozens of emails regarding great summer programs start flooding your inbox. However, with so many options and a thorough process involving personal statements, interviews, and deadlines, one can feel confused. In this blog post, we will discuss how to join summer programs for high school students at The Oxford Institute.

At the Oxford Institute and other top summer program organizers, applications aren't just about filling in forms and writing essays. The process is made to filter the students who are the best fit for our programs.

Therefore, you must submit your application correctly, without omitting any necessary details. This is especially important if your idealized program is selective and competitive.

How the Application Process Works at The Oxford Institute?

The Oxford Institute offers three summer programs, including the Oxford London Summer Program, the Oxford Summer Program, and the Oxford China Summer Program. All three accept online application submissions before the deadline. Students receive three responses within a few days of submitting: accepted, waitlisted, or not selected. Selective students might also be called for an interview.

1) Program Selection

Head over to the website's homepage and click on the Enrol 2026 Button or access our application page directly. Once on the application page, choose the program of your choice from the following four options:

Oxford London Summer Program (Age Groups: 12–15 | 16–18 | 19–24; Program Cost: 6,399 GBP)

Oxford Summer Program (Age Groups: 12–15 | 16–18 | 19–24; 8-day program: 4,499 GBP)

2) Choose One Major and One Minor Subject

Next comes one of the most defining factors of your summer school experience at The Oxford Institute: subject selection. We offer various subjects to students, who then choose two for the duration of their program. One of the subjects is a major, and another is a minor.

In addition to academically enriching our students in their chosen subject areas, we aim to create a meaningful experience through cultural excursions and debate coaching. Moreover, students can attend seminars and receive academic counselling.

Some Advice on Subject Selection

If you are a pre-university student, we highly advise you to select the subjects closest to your intended college major. This will allow you to know the subject before your university even starts, and things start to pick up pace. Another advantage would be clarity on whether the chosen topic is the right choice for you.

Moreover, when applying to your dream university, mentioning summer programs can give a good advantage if they resonate with what you are trying to pursue. The summer program is the time when you realize that this subject is your passion, etc.

Admission officers view summer programs as an extra effort to portray how the applicant is motivated, driven, and curious about the selected subject.

In case you are not a pre-university student or aren't attending the program for merit only, subject selection is still important. Choose subjects that are not taught in your high school and are otherwise part of the summer program. Moreover, you can also select subjects that you have never studied and wish to get a good introductory hold of them.

3) Applicant Information

This part is especially crucial. It first prompts you to enter basic information, such as your name, address, gender, and date of birth. Later, you are also asked whether you require visa support and how you heard about The Oxford Institute.

The most critical and defining section here, however, is your personal essay. Under the word limit of 500 words, you have to explain why you are a suitable candidate for the program and what you hope to gain from the program. The personal essay is written in English and should have coherence and grammatical accuracy for a good impression.

Advice on Personal Essay

Do not downplay the importance of a personal essay when applying to selective programs like the Oxford Summer Program. These play a crucial role in assessing your personality, skills, and whether you will be a good fit for the program.

Therefore, try to show, rather than tell, why you deserve to be part of this prestigious journey.

For example, don't write simple facts about yourself like this:

"I deserve to be a part of the program with Photography as my major and Artificial Intelligence as my minor because I am part of the Media and IT club at my school".

While being a member of the Media and IT club is excellent, simply stating this does not say enough about you. Subtly mention your position and how it affects you, and why you want to grow here.

"For the past 4 years, being a member of the Media and IT club, I realized that this is what makes me feel free, and I don't get tired doing it even for long hours. I love mastering techniques of capturing different colors of nature together, and understanding how human advancement and AI are changing the color palettes of our world."

Something like this tells the readers about your connection to what you wish to pursue. However, please make sure not to cram multiple experiences within the limited available word count. Pick a few of them that go best with your application's intent and write perfectly about them.

Lastly, please keep the word count in mind. Keep things concise because admission officers at programs and colleges skim essays, and a more scanable essay is easier to read.

4) Review and Submit

After clicking Next, you will be taken to the Review and Submit page. This page will contain a quick summary of the details you entered and the program you chose. Once you have thoroughly reviewed these, click the Submit button, and your application will be sent.

5) Interview Stage

Some applicants might be invited for an interview. These are short, conversational interviews to determine whether a candidate is a good fit for our program.

Application Decision

After a thorough screening process, we return the applicants' decisions within a few days. Our choices are of three types: "Accepted", "Waitlisted", and "Not Selected."

The Oxford Institute is affiliated with the University of Oxford, one of the world's most highly ranked educational institutions. For these reasons, we offer prestige, class, and a lifelong experience to our students. Our programs are rigorous and beneficial; therefore, a student must meet specific criteria to make the most of this opportunity.

For these reasons, we intake small cohorts of compatible students each year. However, we are not as selective as universities. Our screening process exists to ensure basic English eligibility and some other compatibility checks.
